Sidewalk Saints
02:34

Oh sweet breath of my youth
Oh sweet breath of my youth where have you gone?
Now I'm jaded and empty and not quite as strong
Old saints of the sidewalks
Old saints of the sidewalks do you still move?
Did your boot heels wear thin a lifetime too soon?
I guess when I think about it, which is all the time
A sole survivor in a dying town doesn't count as being alive
I tried to hang up on these tempting times, there's a voice on the line
In the end when the curtain calls was it all worth your dime?
Oh sweet breath of my youth
Oh sweet breath of my youth it's been so long
Now I've waited a lifetime to bring you home

Alley Boy Eternal

Old friend how did we end up back here?
We traced our tracks down the same sidewalks
that we walked along for years
These anxious indecisions seem to do us in
This wishing well is black hole now
We're throwing our two cents in
Like the saddest sinner praying
For a savior to appear
Just like jailbirds we're waiting
For a ticket out of here
So give me a highway stretched out like an ocean
Just give me something that won't let me down again
This angst and rebellion they weren't kind to me
I was trying to show you something
That only I could see
I can almost see our etching on the glass as we pass by
These cafe walls help stabilize the feelings we kept inside
In the stillness of the morning light you're smiling back at me
Cooperatively lonely, and only on two hours sleep

Thanks For The Gas Money
04:57

I was 19 in a punk rock band
Didn't care much for making plans
We found our salvation in basements, bars, and burned out living rooms
The guitar player he couldn't play so well
And the singer just kind of stood there and yelled
I don't think I impressed anyone
Hitting every note you could play on a fifty dollar bass
We started off playing for some local crowds
The bars said you're way too loud
God damn you gotta understand
What we're trying to save and what we're trying to say for ourselves
Just five guys crammed into a mini van
Playing power chords as fast we can
Clearing out a room in five seconds flat
Looking back now there's not much to show
Some records and some t shirts, some folks we know
Thanks for all the gas money goodnight
We got ourselves rolling from town to town
30 pack of beer with the windows down
Staking claims on our place in time
Our heads are getting bigger every time the crowd sings a line
Surprise surprise it all went south
A ten day run we all ran our mouths
Remember when were gonna make the scene?
Now the lights are on, the party's over, and I think it's my time to leave
Well I hoe you enjoyed the show
Or at least a little background music
While you stare at your fucking phones
Here's the part where I say how are you and insert the name of you town
And say that encores are for assholes
So I'll be seeing you around

The Middle Ground
03:38
|
|||
We want change when it suits us
And tradition to protect us
We're all chasing around our own tale to tell
We won't leave the comfort of our sheets
To shake hands out in the streets
And walk a mile in worn out souls to sell
We can't look into the mirror
We fear seeing ourselves clearer
Let's strike a deal that's the fairest of them all
They say there's no God and no masters
But we're killing ourselves faster and faster
Black or white, left or right
The middle ground is all gone
We've got a world full of opinions
We've never left our front lawn
So we'll make sure that our voice is heard
Making every other choice absurd
A false profit margin leaves us nothing more to gain
We'll pretend it doesn't bother us
Being left to rot under the bus
Digging up the routes to drive ourselves insane
So stop taking stock and comparing
All the scars from our past
Lay down the stones and clean up our houses made of glass
And admit that there's the slightest chance
We won't change a thing behind a screen sitting on our ass

Don't Let Go
04:20

He's got his hair combed back
Like his mind it's blowing back and forth
All his bags are packed
As the pedal hits the floor
He said "I just can't stay and waste away here day to day"
Watch him fade away
While the radio plays
She's got her high heels on
And a dress that'll knock em dead
Watch here walk on past
Watch everybody turn their head
This midnight sky will make her eyes shine so bright
She's asking why
She never left this town that night
So put your hopes and dreams on ice
Stand by for good advice
Just don't let go of me
Let the years laugh in your face
While you try and act your age
Just don't let go of me
He put his best blue jeans on
It was Saturday night
They found each other down at the barroom
Said "Everything's gonna turn out right"
These nights they're all one of a kind
Like a song that makes you feel great to be alive

Brett Conlin Bloomington, Illinois
Like many of his songwriting colleagues, Conlin started off playing in punk rock bands and slowly evolved into the self- reflecting persona he holds dear today.. A few chords and catchy melodies provide the soundtrack. Personal highs and lows, the increasing value of friendship and the helplessness of outliving your youth are all abundantly present in these songs. ... more
